MEET ELLE CLAY
WRITER / HUMORIST
Elle Clay is the person who puts other people on. Store opening? She's there. New mixtape drop? She's there. Issue release? Yup, she's there.
Elle believes in people and in the same way, and if not more, when the time comes for people to champion her efforts, they’re there to put her in the spotlight. Not to mention her list of friends are NYC All Stars, Vashtie, Kai of Sincerely Tommy, the list goes on.
When I first met Elle, I knew her as the people’s person, but not ever recollecting what she did. Then she told me she was a writer. I said what kind of writing? “Comedy.” Which 100% makes sense when you meet Elle. Quick wit and real talk always.
Last year she dropped a comedy mixtape entitled "306 LIVE." And it's not only her friends who think she's funny. Picking up press on The Fader and gracing the stage at The Upright Citizen's Brigade and The People's Improv Theater, other's think she's pretty funny too. But more than funny, she's found a way to talk about the things like the challenges of being a woman and her first experience with racism in a way that's personal, but empathetic, smart and real.
She's dropping her premier track for her next tape. In true Elle Clay fashion, get ready to put on the person who puts everyone else on.
As promised, today we introduce "Live by, Die by," the title track to Elle Clay's next mixtape. SUCH REAL TALK on dating and cuffing and swiping in 2015.
And on the topic of love and life, unsurprisingly, her favorite place to read and take a girlfriend happen to be the same go-to spot.
READ: MY BED
It's just cozy and helps me to wind down. Also, helps me fight the urge to be on my phone & watch television. I have a stack of books on the side of my bed... all reading in progress.
TAKE A GIRLFRIEND: MY BED, HA!
SHOP: SINCERELY, TOMMY
Kai is a friend of mine, so I saw ST raw/empty and was floored to see it at completion. It's just a beautiful space filled with beautiful things. I come by on Sundays for almond milk cappuccino.
One of my favorite new pieces is from here-a white satin bomber. I love it, but am paranoid about anyone getting close to me when I wear it.
343 Tompkins Ave., BKLYN
I spent a lot of nights.. and days here last summer. The staff is super friendly and the place has a nice vibe. My friends and I ride over for frozen drinks and really good jerk chicken. On labor day, we stood out front eating jerk in the street while sweating.
788 Franklin Ave., BKLYN
THINK: THE PARK
I like to think in the park. Sometimes I sit by the basketball courts and steep in my thoughts. Not by the playground though because if you don't have a kid, they call the cops on you for looking like a creep.
DANCE: HOUSE PARTIES
There's just a different vibe at house parties. People really tend to let their hair down and just dance. That's what I like, being surrounded by friends with good music. The hotter, the better. Sweat is a big part of a fun house party.
TAKE A GUY FRIEND: POLO BAR
My friend John took me to the Polo Bar for my birthday. It's famously hard to get into, but we did. And we made friends with the staff. The place itself is a Lo' heads dream. Horse power all over. But it's the old fashioneds that keep us coming back.

TOURIST ATTRACTION: EXHIBITIONS AND INSTALLATIONS
I like the idea of temporary tourist attractions, like exhibitions or installations. My parents came up in the summer to see the Kara Walker sugar sphinx...then I showed them the Biggie mural on Franklin & DeKalb.
